Today, I was walking down the street when a police officer started walking behind me with his dog. I sped up and tried to cross the road. He took this as suspicious and got the dog to take me to the floor. I've been afraid of dogs since I was 5. FML

This is fake. Walking faster and crossing the street is not probable cause to sic a trained police dog on you. Either you did something else or you're making this up.

That is technically against the law. Using a dog to attack someone is deadly force on the force of use continuum. Take it to court if you got any injuries

The cop probably thought the OP was running because he had something to hide... he wouldn't just assume that the OP is afraid of dogs.

No, the use of a dog is not considered deadly force. In most US states it is equivalent to using OC spray or a baton. I would hazard a guess that the UK is similar. Another thing to remember, UK police have much greater powers when it comes to stopping, questioning, and detaining/arresting people than do American police officers. You cannot apply the same principals of criminal law that we have here to an event that occurred there.

If he didn't tell you to stop before sicking the dog on you, that's excessive force and he could get in trouble. If he did tell you to stop, it sucks that you were afraid but not cooperating just puts you in a more threatening situation.

Never ever just run. You should've stopped and talked to the cop about your fear. If you're too chicken to do that walk slowly across the street. Sucks you're afraid of dogs but YDI when you don't take proper precautions to not end up as fido's chew toy.

Please differentiate speeding up (as in fast walking) from running. They are not the same thing. I have an idea, how about the cop says "stop," or try's to catch up to the guy, and THEN if the guy bolts (instead of saying he's afraid of dogs) sick the dog on him? I think the only idiot here is the cop...and anyone who doesn't recognize that overcoming a phobia usually requires psychological counseling.
