How can you not taste the difference between a soy latte and a regular milk latte? I've had both many times over the years and if I was so allergic I would spit it out as soon as I taste regular milk...
When it's mixed in a latte, you can't tell.
Are you serious? They taste completely different to me, in any drink (lattes, mochas, coffee). I never thought anyone can mix the two up, well until now... I guess some people can't tell. You learn something new everyday.
#22 I have no idea why you have been downvoted so much, and even though this is an old FML, I do agree with you. One can even smell the difference between a soy and cow milk latte - and the colours differ. "You can't taste it if it's mixed in a latte", yeah, you can. I work as a barista, and I would've remade the drink, but I've made mistakes too - if it's hectic, shit happens.
I don't mean to sound mean, but i am severely lactose intolerant as well and there are plenty of over the counter medications, such as DairyCare, you take one pill daily and can eat and drink whatever you would like, learn your options because mistakes do happen at coffee shops(i work at one).
Just like CheshireHalli said, they don't work for everyone. If I take them I can maybe eat a something like yogurt but I can't drink a cup of milk or anything with too much dairy.
I go into severe Anaphylactic shock whenever I have dairy. Because of this I always say "I have a medical allergy to any dairy products. Please make sure you clean your cups/knives/whatever well so I wont get a reaction." It is a pain in the butt for the server and for me but it saves us both a headache and a trip to the hospital. Maybe try that next time before you order.
Well, since it wouldn't appear that you're not deathly allergic or something such, I'd disregard the lawsuit idea. I would, however, recommend filing a complaint with management. At the very least, she'll get reprimanded. At most, she'll get fired. Since she could've created a life-and-death situation for someone with even worse allergies, she certainly deserves it. Maybe this will teach her a lesson.
I have tasted soy milk and I wonder how anyone can't tell the difference between that and cow milk. Also, in my experience, people suck and truly don't care if they harm others. If I was that lactose intolerant, I'd take medicine before getting any kind of food or drink at any restaurant/coffee shop. I work in food service and I personally do my best to provide customers with the safest, cleanest, non-contaminated food possible, but the majority of people are NOT like me, so you should assume the worst and take Lactaid or something before your next trip to a (different, I assume) coffee shop. You should complain to the manager of that coffee shop and point out the specific worker who gave you the wrong drink. It could have been a mistake - maybe she thought it was soy, but it wasn't, or maybe a little bit of regular milk was in the pitcher or on the steam wand - but letting management know about this issue will hopefully make everyone more aware of what they're doing and serving.
I agree with you. I worked at Starbucks for a year (hoping to not get hated on, a job is a job when nobody is hiring), and always did my best to make sure I got customers' orders right, especially if I was dealing with food allergies; I have a serious allergy myself, and know how much it sucks to have a reaction. Sometimes, unfortunately it's not always possible to avoid cross-contamination, especially in the middle of a rush. We would try to always keep the regular milk and the soy/lactate milk steaming pitchers separate, but at times when we needed a pitcher, and that happened to be the only one. Even when rinsed out extremely well, there can still be traces, and if the OP is THAT intolerant, the smallest amount could probably have set her off. Usually we tried to have someone sanitizing all the pitchers, spoons, etc, that we used, while the store was quiet, but in the morning, coffee shops are generally busy, meaning that all employees should be working up front. I also agree that the OP should go to the manager, usually if the manager is notified about an incident, something will happen. Whether is be the employee be punished in some way, or whatever. However, I don't think the employee should get fired if it was an innocent mistake. If she has a clean record and this is the first incident of this occurring, she should just get written up. Suing also isn't always the greatest idea, as much as people seem to like it.
Were you a dick to the barista? Disrespect would make her less willing to correct her mistake. We aren't chimps, we are human and don't like rude people. You should have mentioned your allergy or better yet not go to coffee shops because they steam the same milk in the same pitchers. Baristas are what we are called everywhere, not just Starbucks.
I agree, we aren't chimps, we're (usually) intelligent human beings just like you are and should never be treated as anything less. On the other hand, no matter how pissed off I am at a customer, I won't give them food or drink that could make them sick. But that's just me - not everyone feels that way.
I am the same way aww I can understand ...
I'm not saying you deserved it or anything because that still sucks but if you're lactose intolerant, and you're ordering a soy latte every morning, you have to expect something like that is bound to happen sooner or later.

You could sue... just saying.
I hope you went back, talked to her boss, and got her fired. Firing her is the least the boss can do considering the lawsuit you could have for what happened.
