YDI. You shouldn't have looked at the text in the first place! Get a Bluetooth and use it for calls to be safe. On some phones you can even make texts and have it read you new texts. But in no situation is it ok to look at your phone or read texts while you're driving! If you can't use a Bluetooth then pull over to touch your phone. Better safe than sorry.

an old mate of mine was driving my car once, with three other people in the back seat, I was just looking out my window in my own little world, when I hear "it's hard to facebook and drive at the same time" safe to say I chewed him out for driving my car like that, with my friends in it

Well, you were an idiot for checking it. With the media attention around texting and driving and the accidents it's caused and the laws a lot of places have against it you shouldn't need anybody to tell you it a bad idea (You shouldn't anyway). So YDI. Funny that your mom was texting you telling you not to text and drive, but you shouldn't have checked it and should know better simple as that.

Irony is strong in this one...but you brought that on yourself OP. You should have known better than checking your phone while driving. You're lucky to be fine, some people don't have that luck.
