Today, it’s been a semester since I came to Shanghai to study and my Chinese girlfriend nicely offered me a pear after a long exam. I cut the fruit to share it with her. When I saw her burst in tears, I understood that it was a way to announce a breakup in China. FML

My condolences op you were such a cute pear together. Look at the bright side you are learning other cultures customs which is awesome (:

it was just a misunderstanding. I'm sure she will understand.

dude, just tell her you didn't know and you didn't want to break up.

Which means a break up. Her offering the pear or you cutting it?

I think giving a pear is a way to break up.

There's a town called California in China?

As much as I would LIKE TO say that you should've studied up on the culture, I won't be that harsh. Honestly, you didn't know. If you explained to your girlfriend for any misunderstandings and apologized for not knowing, I'm sure she'd understand.

This is not a scenario you could expect someone to read up on in case it happens.

Yeah there's no way you could've known that. It'll be fine.

Well, there are so many ways to screw up a relationship with a Chinese person. Give someone a watch, an alarmclock, a bell or anything intended for measuring or marking time and a superstitious Chinese person will think you want them to die. Give someone a pair of shoes and you get much the same reaction as sharing fruit.

China sounds like an overly complicated place to live...

You did explain that you just wanted to share it.. right?

Splitting a pear in half for your lover is bad luck for your relationship.
