Today, multiple people admired my elaborate face paint. This happens every Halloween, at least every Halloween since I got badly burnt in a car accident. FML

That has got to be the worst fml I've read. I'm sorry about that.

It's unfortunate that you are forced to remember the accident's effect on you every Halloween. If you're a glass-half-full type of person, I'd suggest that you enter costume contests, to try and make the best of your situation. :)

This might be insensitive, but did you ever think about talking to your doctor about plastic surgery? Things like getting rid of horrible burn scars is what it was developed for. If the scars are causing you emotional pain (and they seem to be) it'd probably be worth looking into. I'm sorry about the accident.

Would insurance cover it? Scares are more cosmetic reasoning. Maybe $$ is an issue.

I don't think that was an insensitive suggestion. If OP is truly affected emotionally by his appearance, hopefully his insurance can cover plastic surgery. I'd imagine that kind of work would be extremely expensive (depending on the severity of the damage).

OP is in the UK, I'm not sure what their policy on this type of surgery is but in the US most policies would cover this type of work. It's a mental wellness issue, it's not for frivolous cosmetic reasons. Since the UK has state-funded health care, I would assume that it would cover such a procedure. Even if it's not, it can't hurt to ask his doctor.

Many insurance companies cover breast implants after mastectomies, which might be considered cosmetic. It can't hurt to ask. Sounds like it could really benefit OP.

While it is not, something like that should be medically necessary. Having to relive and constantly be reminded of trauma can bring about depression, a medical condition. But hey, on this day and age, it is insane what doesn't fall under medically necessary. I got stuck with a giant bill for tests because apparently knowing if I had ms or not wasn't necessary.

#44 While I will defer to you on whether or not the NHS will cover the surgery, this is a different issue than someone not liking their appearance. It is reconstructive surgery after an injury, though it does seem to be some time after the injury occurred. It would be more comparable to the breast cancer situation than the breast implant one.

When I was a young teenager (12-13ish), my insurance wouldn't cover birth control *cough*bluecrossblueshield*cough* because they said it wasn't a necessity, even though it had been prescribed for poly cystic ovary syndrome. Apparently my PCOS isn't a medical problem... My doctors and pharmacy harassed them until they agreed to cover it. They still try to deny coverage of it every now and then.

I'm sure that in at least some parts of the UK the sure the NHS would pay for it, you just have to prove that it is effecting your emotional health enough (which shouldn't be hard in this instance). But as I say, it may depend on area as I'm pretty sure different areas have different budgets. I think the breast plant issue is kind of a separate thing as those women did not really need to have the implants put in in the first place as opposed to cancer patients who don't really have a choice and, more importantly, the problems all arose at once and there's no way the NHS could pay to have EVERYONE'S implants removed/replaced.

And 70, that's horrible, I'm so sorry. I really don't understand why some countries don't want to have an NHS type care scheme...to me it just makes so much more sense than separate insurance policies for everyone...they only cause people who can't afford the best policies to suffer...I personally like Obama but I don't at all expect everyone in America to - I don't understand why anyone would be against Obamacare though.

And before someone chews me apart, I'll admit I don't know everything about Obamacare and I know it's not quite the same as the NHS but I believe the general gist of it is to make healthcare more affordable for everyone, right? Also, I believe it includes a tax on using sunbeds and I'm pretty sure anything that helps stops people risking cancer just so they can look like a roasted oompa loompa can't be bad..

like other people have said we in the UK don't have to pay for healthcare (well technically we do thru taxes) but it would very much depend on his local NHS trust, if any surgery is considered "cosmetic" prob wouldn't get it on the NHS unless he could prove it affected him psychologically but he probably would have had some skin grafts and stuff don't know obviously varys from case to case and one NHS trust will differ from another

I don't know the UK's healthcare policy but it does seem to hurt OP emotionally.

Even if NHS approves the surgeries, its bureaucratic (in)efficiencies would ensure that OP would have to endure a few more Halloweens.

Happened to me 5 yrs ago. Luckily I healed well. Know the feeling OP. My gf at the time got a kick out of calling me Freddy. Ppl are stupid. Unfortunately insurance only covers so much.

Comment moderated for rule-breaking.

Show it anyway

That was actually a terrible thing to say. Disregard when people say things like that, OP! And I'm sorry about your situation, but life goes on and I'm sure you're a beautiful person on the inside AND still the out :)) (that was cheesy, I know. Don' judge!)

Well, that comment will surely strengthen OP's insecurity. (Oh, and before the fleet of drones state that Perdix sarcastically jokes with every comment; I already know that he does.)

Perdix, I usually get a chuckle out of your comments but this one just makes me want to smack you.

That was too far Perdix, I'm a bit disappointed in you. Usually I'll make a joke about your comments, but that was just damn harsh.

Peradix dude that was harsh usually your comments rock but this one was nasty

That is beyond cruel! Just because you've never experienced a misfortune doesn't mean you can berate someone you do not even know!

I know you make jokes and are really sarcastic, but you need to know when to stop Perdix. This FML has no funny side and should be treated with utmost respect and caring comments. Remember the line Perdix. You just crossed it.

Oh wow, yet another poor attempt at humor from Perdix, how shocking. OP, I'm really sorry to hear about your situation :-( My heart goes out to you.

dude. i cant believe how much of an asshole you are, just by saying that.

Some people are insensitive and arent brought up right xx

I'm assuming the people who comment on his appearance are strangers, since his friends/family obviously know what happened. They aren't being malicious, so you can't really be too mad at them.

*hugs*, if you want them. I know they meant it innocently, but I guess that's not much help on your end. :(

a customer told me that my costume looked so real and asked how I got a baby bump to look that authentic. when I started laughing he realized that I am actually pregnant and walked away with the reddest face I've ever seen.

That's not really as bad as OP's situation, assuming you're happy about your pregnancy.

On a separate note, why would they assume it was a costume? In this instance, I'm pretty sure it's more likely that a woman is actually pregnant than they've just dressed up as a pregnant woman for Halloween...

missmon92 6

@83: I am happy, for the most part, my fiancee is kind of an idiot which unfortunately all of his idiosyncrasy's came out after I told him the news of my pregnancy @88: Because all customer's are stupid, that's why. I've learned to deal with them much better knowing that they have an IQ of -7. I still want to punch them in the face for being so stupid but...I need my job. So, I just smile and laugh. @99: Good enough excuse, haha. Although I was in my work uniform soooo...nowhere in the movie is she ever in khaki's and a black polo, hah

Oh man... I totally should have dressed up as Juno for Halloween... I've never seen it though but people who have probably would have laughed.. I'm so very sorry OP :(

I'm sorry OP! :( people can be so clueless sometimes, I hope your Halloween wasn't totally ruined!

It's Halloween... How are they to know its not makeup? Or let alone know about the accident? People are not psychic.

RedPillSucks 31

Maybe it happened in a place where you wouldn't expect people to dress up during the day, like a bank teller or a receptionist.

That sucks, I'm sorry you have to be reminded of it everytime someone asks....I think I'd probably embrace it though - it's like the one time of the year you can use it to your advantage! It'd probably upset me the rest of the year but for Halloween I think I'd just go all out and make it part of the best costume ever!

You could dress up as the Phantom from Phantom of the opera

That really sucks. You could play it off as a badass costume though. People can't make you feel bad about something in which you aren't ashamed
