Benefit of the doubt, right? I wonder if there is a way somehow the kid did this accidentally... Maybe he confused the microwave with the cage? Ok, jokes aside, I do hope that your son is okay (maybe the hamster too!) (ok, probably not the hamster D:)

You probably want to comfort him. This is the wrong instinct. He should feel very bad about this, even if it was somehow mistaken. He should learn that hurting another living thing feels terrible. Or, yeah, as other have said--have fun explaining your serial killer son when the news crews show up.

When I was 8 I didn't know any better and microwaved a lizard. I thought it would warm the lizard up since it was cold. I didn't know that it would kill the lizard. An 8 year old may know it's wrong to hurt things but they may not know everything that can cause hurt.

My son is 7 and when he put a fork in the microwave at 6,(baby sitter was watching him) I punished him and now he knows that non food items don't go in the microwave.
