I have terrible allergies, and Benadryl didn't work for me either. I either fell asleep or felt no better at all. Eventually I went to the doctor and got much stronger pills instead of over-the-counter stuff. It's like a miracle! I would advise that :)
I would suggest seeing an allergist. They do prick you with needles (they're injecting allergins to see what you're allergic to and how allergic you are to them) and it itches a LOT while waiting, but its probably your best bet. I have really bad allergies as well, which come with runny nose, itchy eyes, and asthma. They gave me Flonase (which is basically stuff you spray into your nose. Piece of advice; don't swallow too much after taking it unless you like the taste of Flonase at the back of your throat) and Dulera, which is basically an inhaler you take through a chamber twice a day right before you brush your teeth.
There are many types of benadryl. You need the one with the active ingredient of acrivastine. That's the one that works, not sure if acrivastine is available in the USA but in the UK it works like a charm. Cetirizine and Loraditine are kind of useless..
The effectiveness of specific medications really depends on the metabolism of each individual. It hard for me to tell someone what they should take without seeing their symptoms and medical history. That said OP really should go see an allergist, but if they can't afford that they can always talk to the pharmacist where they buy their OTC meds. Off the top of my head, I believe acrivastine is only available in prescription doses in the U.S. I use diphenhydramine for a lot of things that aren't allergies honestly, vomiting and motion sickness mostly. People don't utilize their local pharmacist enough, tell them your symptoms and allergies and ask for recommendations.
You should probably look into a combination anti-histamine regime. Allegra, Claritin, and Zantac all have anti-histamine effects. Obviously, talk about it with your GP or Allergist first, but you should be able to cooperate with one of the two to make a plan that keeps the worst of your symptoms at bay.
I use a nasal spray called Flonase for my allergies, which are horrible this time of year. It takes several days to kick in but it works phenomenally for me

Non-drowsy is a better choice when you have to participate in, ya know, life.
Take a second generation antihistamine. Claritin and Alegra will give you relief with minimal drowsiness.
