I take Claritin and Mucinex-D (guiafenesin and sudafed) for my allergies year-round. Sometimes I don't need the Mucinex so I just take a plain sudafed with the Claritin. All are available OTC and work great. Claritin-D has sudafed in it too, so you could try that. All of them are non-drowsy, but the Claritin works best if you take it daily, not just as needed. Flonase works great too, if you can stand the smell/taste when you first take it.
I've been there done that, during meetings too. really fun trying to stay awake in the most boring meeting ever...
Why didn't you take a non-drowsy medication??
Allegra, this stuff is the best I have tried by far. kicks it out of you fast and doesn't make you tired. I also made the benadryl mistake, never had allergies before and took one at the start of my shift. was a long horrible day lol.
Benadryl during the day isn't the way to go. There are a lot of "non-drowsy" allergy medications, that can still cause drowsiness for some people, but they aren't nearly as sedating as Benadryl. I'm sorry your allergies are so bad, though. They can be miserable. During the day, you can try Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec, or Chlor-trimeton. The most effective of those, in general, is Zyrtec, though that varies from person to person. Flonase and other nose spray corticosteroids are good too. I have severe allergies, and I take Zyrtec and Flonase for 24 hour coverage, Benadryl at night, and when I have really bad flare-ups I have eye drops for my eyes, I do sinus rinses and use ocean spray to clear allergens out of my nose, and I take Pseudo-ephedrine as a decongestant. Sometimes I also turn my humidifier on high and breathe in steam for a few minutes. Don't take pseudo ephedrine close to bed. It is a stimulant. I hope you feel better!
I made that mistake once when I had a bad cold combined with my normal horrible allergies. I got home from work (I work nights so it was 7am), took my NyQuil then took a pseudoephedrine. The warning on the pseudoephedrine says that it may cause sleepiness but also that it may cause wakefulness. I didn't think anything about that though. That was the worst nights (days) sleep I ever had. The combination of the NyQuil knocking me out and the pseudoephedrine keeping me awake was horrible.
Benadryl makes adults sleepy. It's the ingredient in zzzquil

Non-drowsy is a better choice when you have to participate in, ya know, life.
Take a second generation antihistamine. Claritin and Alegra will give you relief with minimal drowsiness.
