Did you hear any mention of the party before NYE? Maybe they assumed you were coming sans invitation.

If he was your best friend it woukd be ok to assumed that you were invited. If im having a get together, I don't have to invite my inner circle friends. Just telling them I'm having a party is the invitation. If they didn't realize they didn't invite you then its obvious that they didn't not invite you, they just assumed you knew you could come. Don't be a drama queen by waiting for an official invitation. Think of all the fun you'll miss out on in life. YDI
