Not always, some places, mainly entry level jobs, make you sign a document that basically forces you to say you can quit whenever you want or be fired whenever they want no questions asked. They won't hire you until you sign. I think it's called "at-will employment" but I'm not completely sure. A lot of fast food places have this, at least where I live.
It depends on what state they're in.
Not if it's a US At-Will state. Then they can just fire you

That's highly illegal almost anywhere in the west even if you work casually. Sue the company, make bank.

some states the employers doesn't have to tell you why they are letting you go. stupid as hell but it is what it is. however you can probably claim unemployment until you find another job. at least that can help you a little while you search for a better job. it was probably for the best anyways. he sounds like a tool.
States with the ironically named Right to Work Laws make it so your employer can fire you without warning or reasoning.
I guess the "Right to work" laws are named like burglary laws - designed to fight what they're named for.

Not always. It depends upon whether OP was an at-will employee, or a contractual one. The fact that OP worked in an office suggests the latter, but if not, they could technically be fired for almost any reason, as long as it's not for discrimination.
California is an at-will state. People can quit, and employers can fire you for no reason. If this occurred in CA, this would be why the OP's employer doesn't have to tell them anything.
only in some states. here in idaho you can fire people because you dont like em.
98% that's illegal. Pretty sure they have to give you a legitimate reason.

Don't workers need to be informed about what they're being fired for?
