Today, my boyfriend dumped me. He decided he would be a gentleman and do this to me at work, over text, during a rush of unsympathetic customers, the day before our anniversary. FML

But, just think of the money he saved! Without expensive gifts and anniversary dinner, he probably saved more than he would by switching to GEICO. Maybe he finally decided he deserved someone better.

In no way is that defense. He dumped her the day before, and if he were to say something like, "Oh, I didn't remember tomorrow was our anniversary", that would've been even worse. OP doesn't need a guy like that.

How can you assume customers are unsympathetic? You should have crumpled into a ball of tears and sobs and begin to wail inconsolably. Maybe they'll come to your aid, or maybe they'll just point and laugh.

Getting dumped over text day before your anniversary sucks. But if you're able to check texts during work, I don't think your "rush of unsympathetic customers" really counts as a rush, or maybe they'd be more sympathetic if you weren't texting and instead were helping them.
