I like how so many say she is insensitive then they call her named. This post brings out the most hypocritical people I've seen so far.
exactly what I was going to say after reading all the comments. many people are calling her nasty names because she called someone a nasty name (without knowing it was truth). I did this too when I was 13. my bf's brother was mentally challenged, but I didn't know until I said "retard" about something and he mentioned "my brother is retarded". I felt awful, as I'm sure OP does. Give her some slack; lesson learned.
YDI bitch calm down
Yeah, you really deserved that. First of all you could have at least assumed when he said he needed to be fed. Also you really shouldn't use the "R" word anyway, I get that people use it all the time, but it can really really offend people and if you say it at the wrong time you could get in trouble. Plus people with disabilities are amazing. I work with disabled kids and they are the most amazing people on the planet.
feed (v.) 1. give food to To you and everybody else who doesn't understand the English language, feeding is not limited to putting a spoon in a child's mouth. Going to "feed" your brother could simply mean you are cooking food for him. Lots of people ride the bus but don't cook their own dinner. There's lots of reasons he could have been feeding his brother. He probably still didn't mean that he was spoon-feeding his brother.
I have to say I do have negative feelings towards the use of "retard" outside the politically correct terms. My brother has Down Syndrome and I saw him come home crying becausae of people using that word. I do understand, however and unfortunatly, that it is becoming a part of society's vocabulary. I am not going to sit here and say that was a jack ass move for saying that (I know it was probably hurtful to your boyfriend because that is not a fun thing to hear about a loved one). I don't want to criticize because it is hard to control anything, especially language, in these growing ages. So, YDI totally, but it was a slip of the tongue. If your boyfriend is sensitive about the word (which I'm guessing he probably is because it is hard to have a loved one who is challenged and not be sensitive about "retard") I'm also willing to bet he is used to hearing "retard" in its negative uses. Which also means he can handle it well. I know I ask my friends to limit their use of it around me- I do so politely and explain why- and they are more than willing to watch it around me. So yea its a crappy feeling, but I'm sure he understands and knows how to handle it. Just make sure you watch what you say from now on!
awesome response. I appreciate your maturity and understanding the mistake and how easy it can happen these days. you can understand feelings OP must've felt and the feelings from the boyfriend too. most of the responses are as disgusting as what she's being bashed for. people make mistakes and this was a learning opportunity for her.
I woulda been like :"oh"
YDI. I'm pretty sure the rates of mental retardation have gone up in the last few years. That's why making jokes about it is just not safe, but still very tactless on your part.

That's what you get for being snippy. YDI.
