Today, my boyfriend proposed. The ring just had a piece of graphite on it. My boyfriend argued that since graphite and diamonds are both just forms of carbon, it is the same thing. FML

Kind of a lame excuse, but if it's the ring that matters to you and not the marriage, then you're not going to get it there. Suck it up, and if you care that much about how the ring looks, try to see if you can get another (cheap) fake diamond or something.

well no he isn't, the structure on a diamond is so much more advanced than graphite it isn't even funny

How is it more advanced? Diamond consists of repeating unit cells. Graphite is way more interesting, with sheets composed of unit cells stacked on top of each other.

well lets start with the fact that is a 10 on the hardness scale(actually more like a 22 on a relative scale compared to others), takes about a billion years for the chemical process to happen, and is simply prettier.
