Today, my brother's home for his annual visit, lectures my parents once about their eating habits. They promptly throw away all of their junk food. I'm there every Sunday, and have been telling them to eat healthier for medical reasons. They never listen. He's in sales, and I'm in med school. FML

He has charisma, you don't. Med school is right for you -- you can make tons of money even if you have no personality.

Don't make a big deal out of it. Maybe they just threw away the junk food to make their son feel better, since they see him so rarely. But that doesn't mean they'll suddenly change their eating habits just because of a speech. And if they actually do, you should be happy they're eating healthier.

sales men are manipulators. You are medic. People don't listen to thier doctor, they listen to commercials.

learn how. to write complete, sentinces with, the right punctuation. cuz all ur sentinces look, like this and. it's annoying.

When trying to sound smart, you might want to spell check. It's "sentences."

check yer sarcasm detector, it's out of phase

When they ask for a last-minute advice, give them none. Parents: (on normal situation) "Oh you're just saying things..." (with swine flu) "OMG! Help me! What medicine should I use?!" You: "None. I'll just be saying things..."

sales people have the gift of the gab. medical don't!

Dear OP, lol, this was great. But neither a FYL or YDI. Doctor's job is to discern illnesses. Not to sell patients on the sickness. ...well okay, anywhere but *in America* that's their job... but whatever. Was this post based on the expectation that your intellectual knowledge of the subject was going to convince your folks on doing more to maintain their health, than your brother's ability to sell them on it? Puns and your profession's purpose notwithstanding, what did you expect... against your brother the salesman? A title arguably *defined* as getting (interested) people to pursue a particular course of action. Ever notice how the existence of their entire profession rests on getting us to make a purchase we're being indecisive about? They're convincing; it's what they do. Your profession discerns illnesses. My guess? Granted I'm really high, but if you want people to change be it behaviorally, or because you're aware of the physiological harm they're doing to themselves based on your 'particular field'- you have to say it with feeling, man! Be it manipulations to get to an end, or because you love someone; when it comes to convincing people they need *anything*, emotional conveyance of a concept will always trump intellectual expression of that same knowledge. Just ask Obama, or the guy who sold me my last car. Okay I'm done, g/l.

One of the most important purposes of a doctor is to PREVENT illnesses. For instance, by encouraging people to change unhealthy habits.

Point ceded. It just dawned on me that doctors are *supposed* to care about their patients... not just their paycheck or what pharmaceutical lobby they can push. >.>
