he clearly aired it up too much, or there were other problems such as the tire being old and thin in spots.. neither I, nor anyone in my family has ever had a tire explode just because of a small hole, and my family is very involved in mechanics and all that stuff. Hope everything worked out for you in the end.

FYL OP. I hope that you're not hurt and that the only resulting damage was to the tire and not to yourself or the others around you. More communication between you and your dad would be advised. Edit: After a re-read, it was clear the miscommunication was not your fault.
