Mental health meds almost always make you gain weight. Showering, going out everyday, a positive attitude and exercising WILL improve your mental health. -- yours sincerely from someone who got better.
My Dad was like that until he had Mental Health issues himself.
From personal experience I can relate to your father's opinion. I wouldn't go as far as saying that it is all caused by being overweight but being overweight affects your self image, self esteem, prevents you from certain activities etc... which can all collectively cause more serious mental health problems.
because that totally has everything to do with each other
I'm just barely avoiding being underweight and my father is convinced that exercise will cures every issue as well. Despite being medicated and in therapy from 14 on, he doesn't seem to want to acknowledge my mental health issues, and the physical symptoms thereof. I will never have enough energy for exercise, depression with anxiety eats away at both energy and motivation. But since becoming a gym nut made HIM feel better, he thinks it's a cure all. It's not. It's something he enjoys, so it helped him. If it's work for you, or overly stressing/painful, it's not going to help. Least that's what my shrink says.
This is such crap!! My dad is like this too. Having a bad day? Got a weird cramp in one of the fingers of my left hand? Have a lump on my knee which hurts when I touch it? Must be my lack of exercise!! ... NOT EVERYTHING has to do with how much physical activity you have!
Sounds like my dad. According to him, my problems are because I don't eat "right" or sleep "right". The only problem is that I moved out a year ago and the only time he sees me I don't eat right, because he doesn't and don't have any good food in the house.
No parent ever wants to admit they have a child with a mental disorder :/ I would know...

he's not completely wrong, correct food and exercise actually can improve mental health!
Soo what's the cause of your father being an asshole?
