Today, my first day on the job, I locked up the office after everyone left and set the alarm. An hour later, my new boss angrily emailed me that I locked him inside the building, setting off the alarm and prompting the entire police department to show up. FML

Unless they gave you proper instructions on how to do it you're not to blame. Granted, someone should've stayed with you just in case.

Promoting an entire police department? Your office must be super popular with law enforcement.

shouldn't your boss know the code to unlock the alarm?

Why would an entire police department respond to an automated alarm?

Lmfao, I wouldn't even feel bad for the boss when I went to work the next day, I'd be laughing too hard, probably even in their face

Why would they expect a brand new employee to be responsible for that?

It's your first day on the job and you're already responsible for closing on your own? That is absolutely your manager's fault that this happened. You're new and still learning closing procedures; at the very least, you should have had someone shadowing you for a couple of weeks or until you feel comfortable to be left on your own. I've been at my job for a year and I managed to set off our alarm for the first time the other week -- shit happens.

It was only an accident, it's okay OP! Next time, you know to check the office throughly. That's all.
