Today, my girlfriend dumped me. Her exact words used were "I like the idea of you, but I don't like you." I still don't know what that means. FML

She likes the idea of you= she likes having a boyfriend. She doesn't like you= ... She doesn't like you..

in theory you're good but you don't live up to her expectations

I know I'm late commenting on this but I've known someone who felt like this what they meant was essentially they like who they think you are and who they've created in their head / used to know but they don't like the real you or what you've become, not necessarily in a bad way but just that you're not who they want to be with even though in a sense you are... think that didn't make sense, oh wells

It means she wants to be with a guy like you (similar traits) but not with you in particular.

it's a thing from a book...this guy really loved a girl and she said "you don't love me. you love the idea of me" he likes the side of dating such a dangerous person but he doesn't know anything about her or her real personality

It means she likes who she THOUGHT you were, she likes the you in her head, but not the actual you. Its okay tho. You dont like everybody so everyone wont always like you. Its okay.
