Today, my landlord emailed me, stating that she hasn't been receiving my rent. After some investigation, I found out she's been using the money to buy booze, and hasn't been putting it into the house owner's account. FML

That's why you ALWAYS get a receipt.

Sounds like something my property manager would do.

Well, in Aus you gotta be putting the amount straight into the house rent account, why the **** was OP giving cash to the landlord and not keeping any receipt/proof. I would say YDI .

Tell me you aren't stupid enough to be paying your rent in cash. ALWAYS leave a paper trail!

It didn't say anywhere that OP was using cash or that there were no receipts. It just said that the landlord wasn't putting the money into the owner's account. And I don't think anyone deserves a lying, drunken, jerk for a landlord.

That's why you ALWAYS get receipts

That is why I always paid via online bank transfer. That way if they accuse you of not paying it, you have proof, I have never paid cash or gone to the bank to do a direct deposit. You can always get a receipt, but not proof of what its for, with bank transfers you can add a note or reference to it. Years ago when we had our first baby the landlord accused us of not paying rent, she gave us an eviction notice (we are in Australia and she didn't provide proof of this or follow the law) when I was in hospital and just had the baby. I had to ask my father inlaw to give her a printout of the payment from our account. This was the same b*tch that said she wasn't replacing the toilet that was badly cracked(she was told to replace it by HER plumber) and told us to do smaller poo's for it to work, we reported her when we moved to relevant authorities. OP I hope you can prove you paid, otherwise its an expensive lesson for you. BTW you should try and get her to admit she lied on email, you can use this as proof in court, I have done this and it has worked.

Always get a receipt. If she won't give you one, use money orders or get the cancelled checks from your bank.
