Today, my uncle gave me a very expensive bottle of champagne at a celebratory family event. We were celebrating me spending 1 year sober. FML

Well it can serve as a great reminder to keep going with your sobriety.

If you've been sober that long I'm sure you can stay strong and resist it. Did your uncle even know what the celebration was for though? That's pretty inconsiderate.

Congrats to you, poster. Be happy that's a great achievement. I wish I had your will to stop consuming beer systematically.

This reminds me of a video The Onion did a few years ago on Alcoholics Anonymous. The uncle must have seen that video.

Well good job! An occasional drink should be okay...just don't over do it...

Sometimes people take a milestone like that as you being cured of your problem. They think bringing you alcohol is like saying they believe you're strong enough to handle it. Like celebrating that you are in control now and capable of taking a drink without relapsing. Congratulations, OP. Hopefully the gift was meant with good intentions.

That was a pretty dick move your uncle pulled. Sorry to hear that OP.

Hang in there op! You're strong, you went a year, you can do another!!
