Today, my window fell out of the wall, landed on my head, and shattered. I waited 6 hours to get 23 stitches in the emergency room. When I got home, I found a bill. I owe my landlord $130 to replace the window. They won't fix it until I pay up. FML

So I'm not lying. The window repairman came today (after I paid $130) and said that some spring or something in the window frame was worn out. Boston had some very strong winds the day the window fell out, which pushed it out of the frame. I was on the floor doing a puzzle of Fenway Park if you needed to know.

there is no way he can legally make you pay for that if it turns out that the accident was a result of his negligence. if he knew about the problem before and didn't fix it then you can easily sue him for the damages to your person. either way, the landlord cannot make you pay for the window unless you did something that caused the window to fall out in the first place. he is just trying to intimidate you. don't fall for his bullshit. i'm a law student. i know this stuff to be a fact.

you should demand the medical bill from your landlord instead. for renting a place with a dangerous window.

Your landlord is also creating an unhealthy living environment for you because it's winter and now there is nothing to block the cold air. They can't hold back on fixing it. I hope they pay for the heat and you don't.

sue ur landlord, he supposed to provide a safe and healthy environment for his tenants. places like that shouldn't fall apart that easy well goodluck !!!

Wow! Review your lease. If there is a clause in that says something about you having to pay for any damages, then you're out of luck. If not, then it is absolutely the landlord's responsibility. If they still wont pay for this, there are a number of paths you can take, so get some legal aid. You can get repayment for these damages, medical bills, utilities that are effected by this, subsequent damages (such as robberies, if someone out there decides to take advantage of the huge hole in your wall), if you have the proper help by your side. One thing to remember is that you are only RENTING this property. The true owner is the landlord. At the very least, move out.

don't be tonto u got money just call the police

no offense that's pretty funny. just everyone is saying. if you didn't screw with the window, he can't charge you.

Six hours for stiches sounds normal in the USA. Did you at least have medical insurance? I would talk to a lawyer about this if I were you. I would think that the landlord would at least have to make sure the place is safe and sound before renting it out. What if the pipes to the stove was leaking gas and it blew up? Would the landlord tell you that you had to rebuild the kitchen?

Get three quotes then have the window repaired. Withhold the cost from your next rent, attaching copies of the quotes and the final bill. Then sue the landlord for failing to maintain the property, as windows should not fall out.

In my last apartment a window fell out and broke. The landlord wanted money before he'd replace it. We called health and safety complaining that we didn't have a window and our landlord wouldn't replace it. Health and safety came by, checked it out, and fined our landlord and told him he'd receive a fine each day until the window was replaced. It was awesome.

^THIS!^ haha. But I still don't get why you people have windows falling out. do you live in old apartments? do you have termites? what gives? And OP, I would think that your landlord should also pay your medical costs as well

by law they can't charge you for that actually yiu can sue them. that's an endangerment to a tenant and maintainence neglect on their part
