There is a difference between food that is expired and food not fit for human consumption. You should bring this to the attention of the management. If they are keeping food that long before giving it away they should probably be throwing it out instead.
If it still looked fine from the outside I'd imagine they just left it out. And since it's just trash food from the cafe I doubt they have any system to monitor how long each thing has been there.
Nearly threw up after reading this. I'm so sorry, OP
This EXACT same thing happened to me about a year and a half ago at the coffee shop I worked at in WI!! We always get left the 'expired' food if we want it, and we have special cupcakes from a local baker that's pretty famous (for the area) for her cupcakes. I haven't been able to eat one since! I feel your pain!
I'm honestly physically nauseous right now.
This is actually a huge problem with most major places where food of any kind is served. The employees are usually told by their managers several techniques to make the food look fresh when its past the best before date. Its a horrible, horrible thing. For all you know your local bakery, deli, or supermarket has been serving you expired food for a long time now.
Well YDI for eating them if you knew they were expired.

Not completely sure about this, but I'm pretty damn sure that's not ok. You should bring this up to the people in charge. Then again if it is well labeled that it's expired food, and your choice to eat it or not, you kindof deserve it.
Uh yeah, I'm at least like 3% sure that's a health risk, might wanna bring that up to the health dept. or something..
