Today, my wrists were hurting really bad while working the production line. I was told to let my supervisor know so he can help accommodate it. Both supervisors responded by ending my employment there to make sure I don't suffer long term damage. FML

mousiepie tells us more.

well, it was a contracting job. I've had weak wrists all my life but I normally just wear wrist braces and I do just fine. I hadn't wanted to say anything but also having still been new, I figured the bulk of the pain was from the repetitive motions from a 12 hour shift and that once I had been there a while, most of the pain would disappear. When my coworkers noticed the pain from my hands not working properly they suggested the nurse and I asked if she can provide a wrist wrap. They then said I needed to talk to my supervisor before the nurse and being a medical facility, they stated that they can't say they care about saving lives and the safety of the employees if they allow me to get hurt. They then directed me to my contracting supervisor who stated they will find a clerical type job for me. I just felt lame for the fact that for once I was told I couldn't perform a job because I might injure myself. :/ I appreciate the support and kindness though. Thank you.

Aww, sucks to hear, but if it was "at will" employment there isn't much you can do about it.

Even with at-will employment, an employer cannot fire you for workplace-related injuries. This is illegal. Sue them immediately.

Pretty sure you got a Wrongful Termination lawsuit on your hands there. Get a lawyer and get your former employers on the phone.

it's time twist their wrists...sorry OP.. fyl..

Wow they really need some more empathy and creative solutions. Good lick on the job hunt and healing OP

As others have stated, even under at-will employment this particular situation is still illegal. Look into how you might be covered under OSHA as well as relevent state safety and health laws.

First, if it is a work related injury, go see a doctor and file workers comp for the injury. Second talk to the labor board about whether or not they can legally dismiss you. If they fired you because they believe you were injured on the job and are trying to keep you from doing a workers comp claim, that's illegal in the state of California. Look into your legal rights and get those wrists checked out to make sure there's no permanent damage.

OP, have you had pervious performance issues at this job? I only ask because this seems a bit extreme to fire you just because you said your wrists hurt.

#55, I hadn't had previous issues before. My wrists have been weak all my life but I was still able to do what was required for the job description. Then again, I wasn't there very long, but it's been a few days since my assignment was ended there and my wrists are hurting pretty severely. Thank you for your support.

On one hand, I feel your outrage. but on the other hand, I feel like it was more or less the right thing to do for your supervisors for 2 reasons. 1) you might sue them if you sustained some sort of permanent injury and they wouldn't want the responsibility and 2) if your hurting from heavy work, you might be better off in another job anyway

But how would they know the longterm implication of OP's hurt wrist if he or she hadn't been to a doctor yet? It sounds like OP was simply requesting to do something else for the day so they wouldn't hurt their wrists more than they already had. Without medical treatment, the supervisors had no information at all about the injury - if it was even work related, easily curable or longterm damage that the company was responsible for and would have to pay for. They should've given OP easier work to do or sent them home for the day to see a doctor, not immediately fire them.

Thank you #69, we had discussed those possibilities before my contracting supervisor initially decided to end my assignment instead. It definitely would have been much nicer and less upsetting if they had given me a chance with the wrist braces, but they are trying to re-direct me to other employment in a clerical position instead. So I suppose it will all work out(: Thank you for your support.

In fact #58, I do agree with what you've said. I was more depressed than outraged because I understand their reasoning. I was hurt only because I was thinking about the people i'm living with and that I need the money for the mortgage since I live with close friends who I don't want to let down. To be honest, I was less worried about myself, and more so about the fact that my roommates have had to work harder at their jobs because of this, and I want to take the pressure off of them. Thank you for your support.

That's definitely illegal. If have an injury make sure to file a Worker's Comp and get them to pay for your medical expenses.
