coldstar tells us more.
Just to clarify a few things: my two adult cats (the mother and the baby-eater) are sisters. I had planned to have them both spayed a few months ago but the baby-eater was very unwell at the time, so I decided to postpone the spaying for both of them so that I could eventually get them both done at the same time. By the time the unwell cat had recovered the other had already snuck out of the house and fallen pregnant, so I resigned myself to letting her have the kittens and then taking them both to be fixed. That's how this situation happened. To those questioning whether I was aware of the potential danger, yes I was, but the mother cat is usually dominant to her sister and intimidates her a lot, so I assumed she'd chase her away if she tried to go near the newborns. Instead she seemed indifferent to the situation and simply stood by while her sister killed the litter. As for why I did not intervene, I was not in the room at the time. I entered the room and saw the cat had given birth, then exited the room to go and fetch her some extra food and water. When I returned I found the sister in the room with blood around her mouth, half a leg on the floor, and the mother sitting off to one side washing herself. As I stared at the scene in a mixture of surprise and revulsion, the killer began coughing violently then vomited. So that's how you came to read about this event. As for those suggesting I should punish the killer in some way, I am not going to. She was just acting on instinct, like all non-human animals do. And I think that's all I have to say for now. Sorry for the long comment.

That must be traumatizing to see. I've never heard of such things. And I've had two cats that weren't related that helped each other when they both gave birth to their litters. The fact that the mom didn't seem to care might say that they could tell the newborns were ill or since you didn't know she gave birth, it's possible they were stillborns. Hopefully they weren't alive and healthy. Sorry for the experience you had
I really hate it when people make excuses for not spaying and neutering. You should have spayed them when you first got them separately or not, that is part of being a responsible pet owner. It is sad what happened but the cat shouldn't have gotten prego in the first place. I have had multiple cats throughout my 27yrs of life and managed to keep all of them from getting prego, not cool! Rant over, spay and neuter your pets and adopt people!!!
Quite frankly I don't really care what you think. I posted this FML to provide people like you with a bit of gallows humour and instead I've had what was intended as a harmless, if dark, bit of entertainment thrown back in my face by stuck-up people like you. Get off your high horse. I was not making excuses for not spaying my animals, I was merely explaining why I had not yet gotten around to it. I shall be spaying them both in the near future. Maybe it would have been wise for me to spay them separately, but they are both indoor cats and so I did not anticipate that it would be a huge problem if I waited a bit longer. Unfortunately in that time one of the cats snuck out of the house through a window (which a member of my family opened slightly too wide, not I, before you start blaming me for that too) and presumably came into contact with a male cat before she returned home. I consider myself to be a perfectly competent pet owner, but I'm not going to take the blame for things that were caused more by chance and misfortune than by any fault of mine. It is not my fault that other members of my household open their bedroom windows, and it is not my fault that my dominant cat did not have any interest in protecting her offspring.
You can't always spay them as soon as you get them, they need to reach a certain age first (I think it's 6 months?)
Chill the **** out. Jesus. People are going to say what they want. If you didn't want to hear people like us bitch then maybe you shouldn't have posed it. We are not on our "high horse" because we have an opinion. Your getting so defensive over every little comment I read on here. PEOPLE DO NOT THINK THIS IS FUNNY.
honey, its called life. the expression its a dog eat dog world wasnt just created for the fun of it.
And you didn't notice until the whole litter was eaten?
This is horrific beyond words. I'm so sorry, op. Life can really be full of terrible things that you never even thought of :(
This post actually made me physically ill. This is what a true FML looks like.
Why wouldnt you stop it? Also, fix your damn cats asshole
I just...I can't...ew...omg...you totally deserve it. You allow this to happen, then you have the nerve to get on this site and complain about how you had to clean up the regurgitated kittens?! The real "FML Moment" should've been when the other cat ate the kittens. Instead, you're being a selfish little "you know what," only thinking about yourself and what you had to go through. Those poor little kittens. If only the cats were supervised.
I posted this FML so that people like you could enjoy a bit of gallows humour, which is the purpose of this site; to allow us all to laugh at our and other people's misfortunes, so if you have a problem with me using this site as it was intended to be used then don't comment on my FMLs. In fact, why don't you just piss off and leave this site altogether, since you don't like people using it for it's intended purpose? If you think I brought this situation on myself, then by all means go ahead and click 'you deserved it' - that's why it exists. But don't have a go at people for using a website in the way that it is intended to be used. This site exists so that people can share stories of unpleasant events that occur in their lives, and this was an event that happened in mine, so I posted it. Don't like it? Too bad. You don't own this site, so if you don't like its rules feel free to leave at anytime. I doubt you'll be missed too much.
Woah, settle down there OP. this is a touchy subject. Especially for an animal activist like myself. There is absolutely NO humor in this and I don't believe anyone found this funny. Sense you posted this we have the right to tell you whatever we feel. And those kittens should have been totally separated from any other animal. And for you to see this happening and do absolutely nothing that is just messed up!! There is clearly something wrong with you. This is by far the saddest thing I have ever read on here, especially considering you could have done something. Instead you sat there let it happen then you complain about have to "clean up regurgitated kittens". You are ****** up.
Ever heard of gallows humour (my apologies for any spelling/wording confusions by the way, I'm from the UK)? You know, dark jokes that have you shuddering in horror amidst your laughter? That is what this site is designed for; we come on here to laugh at our and other people's misfortunes, even though virtually all of the events mentioned are unpleasant for at least one person involved, hence the site's name. This was an unpleasant incident, but many things in life are, and this site exists so that we can all laugh away our misfortunes and move on with things, as opposed to becoming overwhelmed with misery and letting it hold us back. So if anyone disagrees with any of my actions, by all means please go ahead and make use of the 'you deserved it' option, but don't have a go at me for using the site as it is supposed to be used and posting this story. I've not broken any site rules by putting up this story (in fact I've done exactly what the site wants and expects of its users), so no one should be complaining about me for that, which that other poster did, which is why I snapped at them. As for the cats, I did not willingly allow them to be eaten. I mentioned in a previous comment that I was not present at the time that the killing occurred, as I had exited the room to go and fetch extra food and water for the mother cat. I returned to the room afterwards to find the events mentioned had occurred in my absence. Had I been present at the time the events occurred, I give you my word I would have immediately intervened. But unfortunately I was not, and upon my return the killer vomited, which was basically the icing on the cake to top off a miserable event. That's why I mentioned having to clean up the kittens; because it was the final event that occurred and topped off the whole incident, not because I was more concerned about having to get my hands dirty than I was about the kittens.
OMG FFS!!!! There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with this FML! All you people saying its the op's fault the kittens are dead, WAKE THE F UP!!! do u think that just because a cat is domesticated it doesn't have instincts? WE still have instincts ffs! fight or flight is an innate instinct we as humans posses. now, cats, dogs & other animals have a sixth sense. dogs can sense earthquakes, rats desert a sinking ship. if there is something wrong with a newborn animal, the mother will either abandon it or kill it. giraffes trample their young if they sense the newborn.isn't healthy. canines and felines eat their young if 1 newborn out of the litter is ill to prevent any infection happening to the healthy babies. The fact that the mother cat left the site of the birth signaled to the other cat that she had no interest or intention of keeping them. mothers DO NOT LEAVE THEIR NEWBORN YOUNG FOR ANY OTHER REASON!!!! Gorillas beat their babies to death if its sick. the fact that you people are trying to lay blame on the op shows that you have no experience or knowledge of the harsh real world. sooky la las. our nursery rhymes growing up are about death, disease, famine & plague. the real world is harsh and cruel. build a bridge, have a spoonful of cement, get over it & harden the f up!!!!!!!!
Thank you good sir/madam. I think the modern world has made some people far too soft. The luxuries that most modern societies now offer means that a lot of people don't have to face any real hardship anymore, so when they are confronted with something unpleasant they don't know what to make of it. To those of us who are more experienced about what the real, unsheltered world is like, this naïve idealism often comes across as overly emotional and borderline idiotic.
People nowadays seem to forget exactly how our beef, bacon, & poultry end up @ the grocery store. Of course not else they'd feel guilty every day @ lunch & dinner i.e., being hypocrites by refusing to acknowledge the truth of life and death that provides the food on their tables.
