Today, one of my cats gave birth. My other cat responded by eating the new litter in a jealous rage, then got indigestion and vomited. I had to clean up regurgitated kittens. FML

Just to clarify a few things: my two adult cats (the mother and the baby-eater) are sisters. I had planned to have them both spayed a few months ago but the baby-eater was very unwell at the time, so I decided to postpone the spaying for both of them so that I could eventually get them both done at the same time. By the time the unwell cat had recovered the other had already snuck out of the house and fallen pregnant, so I resigned myself to letting her have the kittens and then taking them both to be fixed. That's how this situation happened. To those questioning whether I was aware of the potential danger, yes I was, but the mother cat is usually dominant to her sister and intimidates her a lot, so I assumed she'd chase her away if she tried to go near the newborns. Instead she seemed indifferent to the situation and simply stood by while her sister killed the litter. As for why I did not intervene, I was not in the room at the time. I entered the room and saw the cat had given birth, then exited the room to go and fetch her some extra food and water. When I returned I found the sister in the room with blood around her mouth, half a leg on the floor, and the mother sitting off to one side washing herself. As I stared at the scene in a mixture of surprise and revulsion, the killer began coughing violently then vomited. So that's how you came to read about this event. As for those suggesting I should punish the killer in some way, I am not going to. She was just acting on instinct, like all non-human animals do. And I think that's all I have to say for now. Sorry for the long comment.

If you've never eaten someone you were jealous of, you're not truly living.

Cats are revolting and demonic.

That is part of the reason I hate cats

Cats eat cats? Omg, I'm so sorry for your loss, OP.

I also have experience owning and breeding animals, and as an owner I know that when something like this happens it is not the animal's fault for operating on instinct. Therefore punishing the animal makes no sense as in its mind it has done nothing wrong. However, it is your fault. The cat may not have been intelligent, strong, or instinctual enough to protect its own young, but you as the owner and the responsible party both for the cat's pregnancy and the new kittens in your care are at fault for their demise. If my animal dies because it starves to death even if I put out food (let's say the animal wouldn't eat for whatever reason) I would be responsible for its death. If your kittens die because you let another animal kill them you don't get to say "well I guess the mother just didn't want them, they were her kittens and she didn't take care of them." By the same logic that the other cat didn't morally understand what it did when it killed and ate the babies, the mother had some fault with her instincts, being a first time mother she must not have understood that they were her babies. But you did understand, you are hopefully more intelligent than your cat. You understood that those were little lives which you were responsible for, and then you chose to let them die. And if you understood cats at all you would realize they are not little domesticated lions but come from African Savannah Cats, which are solitary and do not live in prides. Such solitary animals will kill newborns of another female if given the chance regardless of who is in charge to insure ample territory remains for their own young should they have any. When an animal is operating on reproductive instincts, they are different from survival instincts. The sister may always be submissive, until it comes to the point where it concerns her own future progeny.

#310 I did not punish the animal. Some people who commented here suggested that I should, but I see absolutely no point in punishing an animal who merely acted on instinct. Secondly, I am aware that cats do not live in prides, but they do live with overlapping territories and sometimes do mix together (e.g. feral cats colonies), so they do have some instinctual knowledge of how to act and/or what to do when it comes to dealing with other cats. Really though, I honestly don't have much interest either way as to what other people think of my actions regarding this incident. I'm a rather unemotional individual, so if you're trying to convince me to express large amounts of regret or sorrow over my actions during this incident you will likely be waiting a long time. To me, this event wasn't particularly unpleasant, just somewhat unexpected and uncommon (in my day to day life that is, not in nature in general). I only posted it to provide others with some gallows humour, in accordance with the purpose of this site. If you agree or disagree with my actions, just go ahead and click the appropriate button.

I thought the FML was pretty horrific, but you're pretty horrific yourself, aren't you? Not an unpleasant event? That's.....really sad.

#319 I'm just fairly emotionally toughened, that's all. I used to work in the medical field, among other things. After dealing with a fair few dead humans, dead cats don't seem too unpleasant to me. It doesn't mean I'm "horrific", it just means I'm desensitized.

I hate the hater's comments that this is because cats are "evil". This is actually something many if not most animals do out of instinct in some insane way of "protecting" their young. Years ago a guy told me a mother dog ate her pups and there was nothing left but their heads. And humans also instinctively want to eat their babies, why do you think when mothers play with them they pretend to gobble up their toes and nibble their ears and say, "you're so cute I could eat you up"?

Who's the father? He might also be upset. Or maybe not.

This is probably the most horrific FML I have ever read...

good god! let this be a lesson to you, GIVE BIRTHING ANIMALS A PRIVATE ROOM CUT OFF FROM OTHER ANIMALS.

idk why you let this happen.... You Bastard
