Today, one of my friends made it to school. He has been sick recently, missing days out of the week. When I saw him, I greeted him with, "Were you dying yesterday?" Apparently he wasn't, but his grandmother really did. FML

That's honestly a terrible way to greet someone, bro :

My friends say it to me all the time because I'm always absent. I can see how OP would too if they're close friends. Just bad timing.

Oof. My condolences to your friend and I hope he wasn't too upset with you.

The best thing you can do is offer your support and apologize, even though you meant no harm by saying it.

He probably knew that you didn't know OP. Don't stress over it, just apologize and give your condolences..

You didn't know so don't beat yourself up too bad but at least now you know greeting someone that way probably isn't the best.

I think we have all made a bad joke like that... Like saying 'omg you gave me a heart attack' when someone recently died of a heart attack :/

Although I realize you were joking, you should always ask if they're okay before making jokes like that.

Yeah, I'll have to go with #7 on this one. I'm pretty sure OP's gesture was just another way of saying "whaaazzup" to his friend. But yet, still unfortunate for both sides

Ah lifes awkward moments. As long as you said something like, oh I'm sorry to hear that, after it's okay. You can be expected to know everything about everyone all the time. One of my coworkers when I was fairly new was joking around one day and said something like, ...Hey it's not like they can prove you killed your wife haha. Speaking of your wife, what does she do anyways? He didn't know so I told him "My wife is dead." I have never seen a human soul so full of joy transform into terror so fast in my life.
