Today, some asshat ran onto the road and tried and jump over my car as I drove by. He didn't make the jump. FML

Oh wow, didn't think this'd get posted... thanks so much for all the support guys! (OP here) Bit of follow up, this happened a few nights ago actually, I was driving through a residential area (lots of trees lining the road). The guy was a teenager, he was doing a 'stunt' while his mates filmed. He ran out from behind a tree, I didn't have enough time to stop completely, but I braked and swerved on instinct. He clipped his leg on the front bumper and rolled over my car, and his friends all bailed. I called the ambulance straight away, they took him to hospital with a broken leg and concussion (he was lucky it was just that). My car isn't in great condition either, he managed to leave a solid dent in my bonnet and crush my windscreen. To be honest, I'm just happy I didn't kill him, but the problem is that laws around here are VERY strict when it comes to these kinds of accidents, so unless I can prove that he was at fault, benefit of the doubt goes towards him if his parents decide to sue. The police who came to the scene were very sympathetic, but there's not much they can do. They're trying to find out who the guy's friends were, so hopefully they get that video evidence. Thanks once again for the support, and I'll give you all an update soon!

Wow that's terrible! You aren't the one to blame OP, hope they catch his friends and prove you innocent!

Forgive me if I get this wrong but you're saying his mates were filming and the only person who could've told you this is the kid you hit. If he told you then his parents have no reason to sue you as the kid has already said it once so he would be able to say it again

How can you be sure the child will say he is at fault. He could lie.

I saw his friends run away after I hit him, and when I went to see if he was alright, he was saying something about 'getting the shot'. Unfortunately, seeing as I was the only one there, it doesn't count for much in terms of evidence against him, and you could also argue that with his concussion, he had no idea what he was saying. I'm assuming they were recording it based on what he said, but to be honest that isn't a certainty, it's more me hoping than anything else.

I hate when people decide to do stupid things that are bad for others and they don't think about the consequences for everyone. I'm sorry OP.

One very cheap dashboard camera could have saved you from all of this, you're not immune to accidents OP, get one for your own benefit.

Ahh, Australia, you never fail to amuse me.

#61 yeah because everyone really expects something like this to happen

I hope the police will be able find the little shit's friends and get the proof you need. His parents are terrible human beings if they are even considering suing you for something they know he did. Especially when they know you may have no way of proving it was his fault, not yours. Good luck, OP.

If I were you, I'd start keeping watch on youtube. Maybe you'll get lucky and one of those dummies will post the fail video.

the innocent are always seen as being at fault nowadays

I live in NSW as well, I am genuinely curious to know what suburb this occurred in.

I wish you got Dash Cam footage. You could have posted it for us all to see on the Dash Cams Australia page. It's great.

good luck man. this is why I like to have my phone on my dash mount recording while I go for drives In case something like this happens or if someone hits me, I can have proof. wish you the best

Yea, people should expect it. Better safe than sorry.

Australia. The land of the ****** up justice system... But I hope that the idiots stupid friends are found an you don't get sued.

My brother had a similar incident. Some chick walked into his car as he was driving past. She didn't even look to see if a car was coming. She hit her hand on the side mirror (which was loose as due to being an old car he was doing up at the time). He slowed down and checked in the rear view mirror to see if she was alright. She kept walking with two others but was shaking her hand. He thought nothing of it. A few days later, I read in the paper about a hit and run. She went to the police later on claiming that a car paused on the side of the road, saw that her and her friends (now there was about 10 people who apparently witnessed this!) went to cross the road and then the car revved its engine and came charging for them! My bro went straight to the police station and told them what had happened. The police were very helpful. It took about 12 months before it went before the local courts, during this time the police came back several times to check his version of events. In the end (if you're still reading this lol!), he was charged with failing to stop at an accident and nothing more because their stories kept changing. Hopefully you will have a similar result. Just stick to the truth!

I was going to say, that it's totally not good that he didn't stop. If you hit anyone with your car, no matter how minor, you have to stop. Checking in the review mirror to see if she is ok, isn't enough. But I'm glad things worked out for him. Glad the cops knew she was lying. Talk about a way to completely destroy someone's life, based on lies and stretching the truth.

Yeah he knew he was wrong by not stopping and received a fine and no conviction for it. The girl and her many extended families gave our family hell for ages afterwards. Funny thing is, she came looking for a job at my parents business ten or so years after the incident. She obviously forgot our family name. Needless to say, she never got the job lol!

Oh.. I thought this would end with, "and they just celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary this year".

The ironic thing is, the dude who jumped on your car also wrote an FML about getting hit by a car and getting a concussion....

The only things that have tried to jump over my car and missed have been kangaroos... My brother had a similar experience, the guy didn't step out into his path on purpose, he stumbled it from behind a pole because he was high as a kite. I think my brother got charged, the cops failed to drug or breath test the loser. Some time later he got a payout from insurance of $41,000. I was the bank teller whose window he came to, to deposit the cheque. It also turned out that his family knew my then boyfriend's family and were invited to our engagement party. He was telling anyone who would listen that he got no money out of it, then saw me, walked quickly out the door - and straight into my brother. He spent the rest of the night hiding from both of us.
