Today, some well-meaning soul told me to just pray my depression away, which would be about as effective as praying away a knife in my shin. FML

I'm religious and even I think people get a bit too crazy about God being the only answer, don't worry OP, there are people out there who will and want to help you!

Well... you could imaginably invest yourself in religion. That could give you purpose in life etc. That's what religions are for - giving you hope, purpose and validation. Obviously the answers isn't so simple - pray your depression away - but it's worth a try.

It would only be "worth a try" if OP was already religious. And also getting real help for their condition.

Patient: The prayers of my family are keeping me alive, Doc! Doctor: Oh? Doctor: *pulls out patient's IV* Doctor: I guess you don't need this medicine then. Patient: HG CH ACH BLR Doctor: Unless, of course, THIS was keeping you alive...

My grandma said the same thing to me a few years back. It makes me so unbelievably angry. Just like people who say "why can't you just be happy" or "snap out of it, it's not that bad"

**** off to anyone who 1) says prayer can replace medication/therapy/treatment and/or 2) tells you how to 'fix' your depression when they haven't experienced it themselves.

And to think it's legal in some places for parents to pray for their children's health rather than take their sick kids to a ******* hospital.

Nothing wrong with that. Maybe they meant for you to pray for kelp. To afford therapy or something, you know?

Good luck with finding a psychiatrist or psychologist who accepts seaweed as payment in kind, even if you do get the kelp you pray for.

I'm sorry that happened to you, OP. I experienced something similar to that and I know how infuriating it can be. That said, I hope you get better :)

I have a very religious friend who used to send me lovely e-mails all the time how depression could be prayed away, smiled away, and stopped by acting happy. What she never realized is that "acting happy" is part of the daily routine for many depressed people, since the majority of people you meet each day could care less about your mental state. Then one day she started having panic attacks that she couldn't control, and has recently informed me that she now understands that mental health problems aren't just people whining about everyday emotions. Sadly, sometimes you have to get hit by the train to realize it hurts.

It works sometimes, but most the times you need tondo something about it:/

Pray is another word for hope. I hope I win the lottery
