It's have a lot of fleas . Get some flea spray for the house and some spot on for the cat. Don't sweat it .

Now you have a long road of killing all the fleas and not just the adults don't forget about the hidden eggs and pupa! Any where the cat touched I would thoroughly wash and get a flea bomb spray and vacuum vacuum vacuum!

Oh I feel for you! We moved in to a house where the previous owners apparently did not alert anybody to their problem. Our whole house, out pets, and out yard was covered in fleas. We bombed it three times, used sprays, carpet powders, flea baths, spot treatments, collars, and regular frequent spraying. It took us 6 months to kill them all. F Your MFing Life

I have so much respect for you for looking after the cat, we need more people like you! But I would take him to the animal shelter if I were you asap, just to check for anything (other than fleas).

Ignore all the YDIs -- you're a good person for doing that. Flea sprays work, and ask your vet for a localized treatment for the kitty.
