Today, two days before my birthday, my parents drove three hours to visit me at school and take me out to lunch. I assumed that it was to celebrate my birthday. They told me they are getting divorced. FML

Today, for my birthday, the only "gift" my parents gave me was the gift of choice: I got to choose which one of them I'll be living with after their upcoming divorce. This was the first time I'd heard anything about a divorce. FML

Today, I called my mom to let her know I was coming home for my upcoming birthday, as I haven’t seen my parents in months. She then stated she hated my birthday because it reminded her she was getting older, and they may have preexisting plans that evening anyways. Really feeling the family love… FML

Today, I traveled 3 hours to a town I hate, to spend my birthday with my mom and brother and his family. My mom didn't realize it was my birthday until the cake slice with candles was placed in front of me. FML

That's pretty shitty. Why couldn't your parents postpone it and happily celebrate your birthday? 26 - It was 2 days before their birthday. The parents could've postponed the divorce so they could have a happy birthday. I think the parents were very inconsiderate.

Ive been there. On my 17th birthday my parents called my brother and i into their room. i thought we were going to talk about where to have dinner - turns out they were telling us our dad was diagnosed with cancer and was starting chemo that week. its rough. Its not selfish to want to be special on your birthday but you also have to remember sometimes, the world keeps going even if you want it to stop. It sucks they chose your bday to do it but you gotta be adult about it. You're in college so its time you start figuring out anyway that things aren't always gravy. (BTW dad recovered, this occurred almost 10 years ago).

Yup, I've been there too...4 times. That's right, my mom started her first divorce when I was still in the womb. But she never announced one on or near my birthday, (near birth, but I guess that doesn't count.) Hang in there, it will be over in about 6 months.

The world does not revolve around you. Your parents are being civil adults and deciding to go their seperate ways. The only thing this will change is you'll have to travel to seperate houses to see them when you o home from school. On the bright side you'll get double the number of presents during your birthday and christmas.
