That's really unfortunate. I will say, though, that my mom was my best friend up until she died. My other best friend lives in a different country, he and I have never met in person! I suggest, then, that you go online and find some people who share your interests. You'll be surprised how many people are just like you :)
I lost my mom some years ago and is hard, but you can always count with someone, I do agree with you that OP can find someone who shares his same interest
I don't see how using your mom is a bad thing; that's awesome. As for the second, just try to be more social, and I'm sure you'll make friends in no time.
Moms are awesome. Fact
I lost my mom and the fact that I won't have thay anymore still hurts :(
you are lot better than those who doesn't consider mother as friend :)
You were probably too nervous to think about it. It happens to me all the time
Was it still a good speech? That could really make the difference you know.
That's a stupid task to give to you. But having a good relationship with your mother is just a nice thing :)

It's okay OP! it'll get better! At least you have a close bond with your mom!
