Kids are fascinated with boobs. They're still close enough to the age of breastfeeding, it's natural to be curious. The parent is teaching them, clearly. I would have laughed it off and says, "yes honey, they're private on me too." Easy way to help reinforce what a parent is teaching and a funny story later on. Anyone with kids knows that there are bound to be some embarrassing moments.

You got lucky the kid wasn't possibly hit since that's some peoples reflex to surprise groping from a stranger. Hope you at least had the kid apologize and use this a time to teach it that what it did was very wrong.

From his age and the way he phrased his question it should have been obvious to her that he had been curious about his mom's breasts, and had been told that they were private. All great the parenting in the world though can't always anticipate how a child's curiosity will react to new information. Hopefully she was a good sport - she probably has kids she's close to, even if she's not a mom herself
