There are no rules for the elderly
I've had similar responses from old people. I don't know what their problem is with being called 'Sir' or 'Ma'am'. It's a sign of respect towards others. Not just old people but anyone. Usually when dealing with customers. I could call them much worse things than 'Sir', especially after a response like that.
