Today, while teaching my high school class about astronomy, I showed them a picture of earth from space. One girl raised her hand, and asked me what the "white things" were. In other words, clouds. FML

Taking pictures

Today, I was teaching a high school calculus class. I wrote a complex formula on the board. As I wrote, students asked if they could take a picture of the board and circulate it. I said yes, and I was pleased as everybody seemed to be taking pictures. Soon, I realized why: my skirt was tucked into my underwear. Within a few minutes, every student in the school had an email with a picture of my ugliest pair of floral-printed panties. FML

I've heard a classmate ask who Babe Ruth was and at my new school a 12th grade English class didn't know that English was a Germanic language :l Maybe it's because I read Omg Facts daily...or that I was raised by my grandma as well as my mom, but I don't even like sports and I know who Babe is...

I've had people come up and ask me the difference between China and Japan, and why British people talk "funny". These are high school students. I feel for you and you, OP.

Why F your life? She's the dumbass you have a job and a degree you can't blame yourself if she doesn't want to learn so it's more like FHL

I believe the point of this FML is that he actually has to teach this girl (of high school age) common knowledge. If she doesn't know what clouds are (from aerial view), then imagine his dismay when it comes to teaching more complex topics. FHisL because his paycheck and career depends on his ability to get his students to pass.

I was going to come down in "the kid is an idiot" camp, but I think the teacher is a pompous jackass. How many people have seen Earth from space? A few dozen. How would a normal perdon know what clouds look like from thst persoective? Maybe no one showed the poor kid that picture from space. No need to humiliate her and crush her curiosity. If everything in the picture was such common knowledge, why did you waste everyone's time showing it?

I agree. The teacher gets paid to, well, teach. Can't assume everyone's seen earth via satellite imagery before.

Really? How many countless popular movies have shown footage of the world from space? You have to be living under a rock if you haven't seen images (even cgi ones) of the earth from space.

I'd be amazed if the kid never saw a picture of the Earth from space - I can't even count how many times I've seen them. Tons of TV shows, movies, magazines, books, etc show images of the earth from space. Even cartoons. But yes, it is possible.

31, The teacher is responsible for all the students in the class therefore its his/her fault not the students.

Not for prior knowledge--she should have learned that a long time ago. If they'd stop tweaking the curriculum for five minutes...

Not surprised. It is America after all.

Sorry Damnsmooth. Our education system has made me mentally incompetent. You'll have to demonstrate in front of all of us before I can try.
