Under pressure

Today, I told my boyfriend of nearly a year that I finally told my mother about him, and that she wants us to fly out so he can meet her. He said “OK” with a blank expression. I went to work, and when I got home, he and all his stuff were gone. He left a note on the fridge, saying, “Sorry, I can’t do this anymore. All the best.” FML

Far be it from me to make a judgment about this, since this is a story that requires context. For one thing, why hadn’t you told your mother?

Not really enough details to be sure, but I suspect you had a commitment-phobic boyfriend. Meeting the parents is a significant step in a relationship… While this hurts, you’re probably better off than spending the next several years with someone who cannot commit to a relationship… There are many ways to kill a relationship. Pushing for a commitment too soon is one but that’s not what this sounds like. And running from a commitment is another.

Relationships feel paradoxical. Built on the ideal to endure all things, yet often shattered by anything.
