Today, I was walking down the street when I saw someone I thought I knew. I waved enthusiastically and shouted, "Hey!" The person stared blankly at me, so I quickly turned it into a wave at someone else behind them. There was no one behind them. I was just waving and yelling into the void like an idiot. FML

That's a good trick to defend yourself against the throngs of people who "saw you when you were a wee little boy" and "changed your diaper when you were little" that wave at you and say hello while you try to remember where you saw their face. Preemptive salutation. You seem like a likeable character and nobody can accuse you of not saluting them when they "used to babysit you when you were four".
