I would go talk to them and ask them to clarify. Take the too-specific essay with you if you still have it.
I'm dealing with the same crap from my boss. It's beyond frustrating. Good luck with future professors though. Hopefully they won't be as confusing.

Question here guys - why would you want an essay to be vague? Is the point not to demonstrate your understanding of a given topic, by being as specific as possible?

Thesis' are incredibly difficult to master.. While your teacher didn't give you great guidance, he did show you the general gist of what you should avoid when writing one - i.e. - being too specific or not specific enough... A thesis balances in between both. Don't discourage yourself though! With practice, I'm sure you'll turn into a pro
