Are you kidding me? What the sister did was ILLEGAL and being family doesn't change that or make it okay to break the law! If it had been a stranger, you'd definitely have them arrested. This should be no different. Also, the sister's life is clearly already messed up, I doubt not having a record will change much... She'll probably just go pull something similar on a friend, who WILL have her arrested, and then she'll just be back here anyway...

I've lived with my sister who's like that. Making the decision to call the cops on family is a very hard one, and OP must be experiencing a lot of tough emotions right now. Don't be so harsh.

Am I the only one that agrees with you?! What kind of world do we live in that has siblings pulling knives at each other and arresting each other. I'm almost sure OP instigated something in some way. OPs sister clearly needs help not prison. Not sure whether I should be disappointed in OPs situation or the fact that the majority of our society has lost all their family values.

I have a right to not have my home broken into, have a sibling weild a knife on me, ect. It does not matter if I called them a ****, crazy, or whatever. The moment they break the law and threaten me... screw family. If family is so important then Op's mom would have been protective on her poor child who just put their sister in prison for PULLING A DAMN KNIFE. No, family means nothing and you do no one any favors coddling the insane.

Surely you can understand where the mother is coming from. She doesn't want her daughter in jail and wants to see her get help. It doesn't matter if this appears to be rational thought or not, it's human nature to protect your children. There's nothing wrong with having her arrested, and legally you're in the right if you choose to press charges, but I can understand why you could go the route of getting her help rather than having her put in jail. It really depends a lot on the circumstances, but you should try to help those you care about as much as possible before you give up on them completely.

if her mom wants her out if jail and getting help, then mom can be the one to bail her out & put her in the psych ward.
