Some people go as far as hiring a private detective when they suspect their partner is cheating. You have no reason to apologize to him. It's time to leave him, and your "friend."

It was wrong for you to invade his privacy however it's not nearly as wrong as him cheating on you with your best friend! Some people won't admit to lying or cheating until presented with hard evidence. Dump him! He's probably lying about other things too, this is just one thing you found out.
Plot twist
Grow a pair, figuratively speaking, and verbally smack down your "best friend" and hopefully now Ex-Boyfriend. You have nothing to apologize for.
