You asshat

Today, my father, who's never played much part in my life, told me how proud he is of me. I choked back tears, and we hugged for the first time in years. Later, I choked back my rage when I saw he'd opened my mail and obviously planned on leeching my new-found SSI money off me. FML

What's SSI? Is it like emancipated child support or something? How come you get the money even if you have parents?

It would be the same as What Centrelink in Australia is. I'm grateful that Centrelink only does direct deposits after reading this FML :|

It's basically welfare if your to lazy to work you get on welfare. Then most people claim to have a health problem because ssi pays better. There are some that actually have health problems and deserve it. But there are a lot that are just plain lazy and want the state to give them a free ride

I get SSI, because my health makes it so I can't work, the people who get it who don't deserve it, makes it hard for those of us who truly needs it!

Social security income, I'm guessing but I think that is correct.

I just googled it. Replace Social with Supplemental. Good ol' Google!

This is why the Australian government only allows direct deposits into your bank when you're on Centrelink. I suggest seeing if you can get direct deposits instead of a cheque so that this never happens again. If it's not your dad doing it next time, it could be a random stranger thieving it from your mailbox.

What's wrong with a dad being proud of his kid being able to get free government money? (I'm not saying the OP deserved the SSI or not.) He's probably bursting with pride that his offspring receiving taxpayer dollars just like a one-percenter Wall Street banker. What's wrong with that? Or wanting to share in the booty?

. . . and people who can convince an underpaid, overworked government bureaucrat that they suffer from one of these problems.

He isn't worthy of the father name tag.

Okay, OP, if you are 18 or older and have moved out he can no longer do this, after all Tampering with the mail is a federal offense. Get him back for his treachery IN COURT.
