I agree. The two things that pop into my head are either that the girl in question is used to being teased or has been the victim of such a prank in the past, or that the OP was overly jokey about it in the first place (possibly from being too nervous to do it straightforwardly, for instance).

If your family worked there then you got lucky. No one should let the girl meet the fam' on the first date. Try again at a non family owned restaurant and take her to yours later.
