Today, I was talking to my friend in Spanish because he understands it better than English. We were in the middle of a discussion about a TV show when some guy from our school ran up, spat on my shoes and screamed, "I SPEAK SPANISH, STOP TALKING ABOUT ME!" and ran away. FML

Knock knock! Who's there? You're a dumbass. I'm OP and he already knew English pretty well, he just doesn't excel in it. Let's also just keep in mind I live in Texas and we were only having a casual conversation. The purpose wasn't to help him understand the English language, it was just to have a normal conversation. I don't think continuing conversations in his first language will make him automatically forget his second.

oh yeah you totalllllly DI. How could you not know he was a famous actor on that tv show.

Famous or not, I'm sure OP and his/her friend really were talking about him in Spanish after that.

But what does the the first Foo Fighters song and Cobain have to do with this?...

incoherentrmblr 21

Makes sense, just wished they published more creative headlines sometimes...

incoherentrmblr 21

Yeah, but estúpido is considered really offensive, along the lines of "******* retard"

That's totally wrong. Unless you live in a convent or something.

It's not really OP's responsibility to teach his friend English, #5. I see that it would be a bit more helpful but I'm also sure his friend appreciates being able to just hold a casual conversation in a language he can easily understand and speak.

That may be true, but just because it's the easiest and most-appreciated option doesn't mean it's best for him. It was simply a matter-of-fact statement, I'm not trying to rag on him for a casual conversation in their native language.

Not every moment has to be an English lesson. Imagine if you suck at reading and your friends constantly told you to read things. If that happened to me I would get really embarrassed after a while, feel below my friends because I can't read well, and it would just make going out with them undesirable. Having a companion who speaks your native tongue is nice, don't make OP feel like a dick for being a friend.

Also, maybe OP knows some Spanish but likes to practice to improve it, so OP's friend could be doing OP a favor. It's not all about English.

Except that the reason cited was because Spanish is easier for his friend. Are you really trying to make me seem like I only care about people learning English? lmao

I'm with MrConcise; coddling isn't going to help him learn. "Submerging" is the word we're looking for. And, OPs friend lives here. He should submerge.

GhostDuck 30

@36 "and OP's friend lives here, he should submerge." That's basically saying "you live in AMERICA speak ENGLISH." People like that piss me off so much. Go suck it.

I know American Sign Language very well, and I'm with you 100%.

Go move to Norway and see how not speaking the language works for you.

Good on you, OP. Apparently, it's easier to justify not having the motivation or intelligence to learn a new language with the whole "HE should learn to speak MY language, hurr durr" instead of just admitting that you're the kind of person we should all strive to be. I agree that when you live in a country where the majority a people speak a different language than you, you should be expected to adapt and learn their language. That has nothing to do with NEVER speaking your own language, though.

Yeah, gonna click YDI for that comment

I do the same thing with my Japanese friend since it's easier for him to speak his first language so good on you OP just block out all the haters

^I'm not surprised that you're in a complicated relationship. You must give your partner migraines.

#70 before, people were making suggestions of possible scenarios which countered your original statement. With OP's follow-up, those possibilities have now been confirmed. You're just upset that the follow-up proved your comment wrong.

MzZombicidal 36

I'd say #5's correct in him thinking he's turning into an arrogant, angry and cynical person (as read from his bio). What a ridiculous thing to get such an attitude over. So someone wanted to talk in their native language, so what? There's literally no reason to be upset or to try to tell OP how to speak to their friend...

Nah, being called a dumbass over a mere matter-of-fact statement and then having everything reiterated is the definition of stupidity. As I stated above, I wasn't trying to crucify him over it. But you people read what you wanna read, selective is the best kind of hearing.

I can say the same thing as I've worked with Chinese people, but normally one is not that famous or important.. Vaya capullo...

It's pretty self-centered to think someone is talking about you just because he's talking in a different language. I wouldn't worry about it unless I actually hear my full name. And, then again, overhearing people's conversations is rude.

I've busted Mexicans talking shit about my girlfriend. I'm German and blew their minds when I called them on it. Then, just to **** with them I started talking to my then-lady in Japanese. (We were language nerds in high school)

I'm Hispanic and my bf is Asian. I probably will never learn his language because it's really hard. when I go to his house, his family doesn't always speak English and I never once assume they're talking about me.

Bet you were actually talking about him after that
