A more innocent time…

By Anonymous - This FML is from back in 2014 but it's good stuff - United States - Hillsboro

Today, it's my 20th birthday. I recently came home from college to visit my family, after my mother had a stroke a few weeks back. She ended up being the only person who remembered to get me anything. She also thinks it's still 2009. FML

Hey at least that shows how much she cares about you that despite losing so much of her memory, she still remembered your birthday! Besides, lots of people that care about me wouldn't remember my birthday without some reminder!

A mother never forgets. Sorry about your mom op.

Appreciate her while you can. Despite her condition, she was able to consider you at the very least. I hope she feels better, OP.

this is the first time I've seen an FML with 0 YDIs

OP's mom just had a stroke, and he thinks the most FML-worthy part of it all is that his family is too preoccupied with that to get him birthday presents. Someone that self-centered deserves to have his birthday forgotten.

It's not the fact that no one else got him a present, it's the fact that no one else remembered.

"She ended up being the only one who remembered to get me anything." He doesn't say that anyone completely forgot his birthday; he's just complaining that nobody else bought him presents.

Awwwww!! Your mum obviously cares about you, as a mum should. Xx

well that didn't last long (refer to my other comment #23) it won't let me actually reply

Hey, I understand it was your birthday, but you know your mother just had a stroke. Is it possible that other people could be worried about her well being? I mean people die from strokes dude, consider your biggest gift is that your mom is still alive. So yeah you deserved it. Not everything is about material gifts.

Seriously. My grandmother had a stroke a few days before Christmas about four years ago so my parents had to drop everything and leave the country (while I was on vacation in another country and trapped there from a storm/cancelled flight). They got back Christmas Eve and were all, "We're so sorry we haven't wrapped any gifts yet!" All I could think to say was, "Um... hello? Grandma just died, I'm pretty sure gifts are the least of our concern right now..." It was kind of cute how sad they were thinking they'd 'ruined' Christmas.

Congratulations, your parents ****** twenty-and-a-half years ago! Feel better, now? The only time you should feel bad when someone forget your birthday is your 18th, 21st, and depending on how self-conscious you are, 40th. Other than that, it's just another day. Welcome to adulthood! :D

Not really... some families celebrate all the birthdays. We always celebrate my parents' birthdays, grandparents' birthdays, etc, and they're all over 50. Birthdays don't become insignificant for every family
