A teacher's burden

Today, a parent came into my class and told one of my 6 year-old students that their grandma died. Then the parent left. The kid started crying from the news, which then got all the other students crying. I spent the rest of the day comforting a class of kids crying over someone else's grandma. FML

Kids will cry over anything, although it sucks you have to deal with it. Sorry charlie. And how shitty of the mom to just come by tell the bad news and leave.

The kid's mom didn't take him/her home? Jeez.

That's very traumatizing for a young child! You think you had a bad day, how do you think the grandma-less child feels!? Really, just shut up!

I'm not saying OP should deserve it, although technically as a teacher of a young class, she should be prepared to deal with things like this. Although the kid's parent - the one whose grandmother died - should probably have known that said kid would be upset, and maybe taken them home or something. And to tell them in front of the other students - not really the right thing to do imo.

Get over it. They're young sympathetic children, and losing a grandparent is painful

The parent should have waited, how rude of them to interrupt a class!!

What was the parent thinking? Hey son, gramma died. K bye!
