Get out of there ASAP! I assume either your friend is depressed, with good reason, or has logically deduced that nothing he does now is going to keep him out of jail and he may as well slack off until he goes there. But it’s not your place to feed and house your jail-bound friend… Unless your name is on the lease, legally you are not obligated to pay your friend’s rent, but sooner or later you are going to be out on the street and in need of new housing while your friend uses government provided housing in jail. If you cannot afford your own place look for a roommate or rent a room. The sooner you remove yourself from this situation, the better off you will be… While we usually want to help our friends and family when they are having trouble, if that “help” is going to cause you to get evicted or not be able to pay your way, you have to save yourself.
