Alexa, play "Five Years" by David Bowie

Today, I saw a psychiatrist for the first time. After telling her everything I'm going through, she looked at me and said "You know… every five years or so I get a case completely beyond my ability to help." I guess it's been five years. FML

I think you should look for a different therapist....

At least she was honest with you instead of pretending to help and taking your money for weeks.

At least you know your problems aren't trivial. I can't get any mental health care professional in town to take my fear of expense reports seriously!

Well, don't bother working with her. Ask for a referral to someone more professional.

I'm sorry op... Sometimes the best people to talk to is your friends so try that (:

That doesn't sound proffessional, does it ? Don't feel bad, OP. You might soon find the solution to your problem. Just look out for your health and keep your head up.

"Beyond my ability to help" is psychiatrist jargon for "I don't give a shit."

At least she didn't ask "are you crazy? ". Time to tind another therapist.

Sometimes, as I found out, therapy can be completely useless unless medication has been introduced for sometime beforehand. I saw two psychologists, stayed in a mental health hospital for a year and had over 3 years of intense medication before my most recent therapy sessions had any effect. and since then I have made huge improvements, almost to the point of total recovery. Finding the right therapist is vital too. don't be scared to see someone else if it doesn't feel completely right. And you will know when it feels right. Good luck and well done for talking the right steps to better yourself :) it's an accomplishment and a half going to that first appointment.

What kind of "professional" says that to their patient? Moron. Keep those thoughts to yourself, or at least make a referral to someone better suited to take their case. Don't waste either of your time!

We could be your psychiatrist OP. Nature is also a very good one. Don't worry, things always get better.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Your psychiatrist was completely out of line speaking to you like that. While the sentiment was acceptable, saying it in such a harsh manner was entirely unprofessional. Please don't let this color your view of helping professionals. As a side note, perhaps you should bring it up with the proper individuals. Perhaps another clinician or their supervisor.

I disagree. Admitting that something is beyond one's ability to help is hardly harsh.
