Today, at work I asked a cute, albeit slightly large customer, her name. Being hard of hearing, I thought she said "Porky" and asked her about it. Turns out she'd said Courtney. FML

I can understand you OP I am hard of hearing as well and can sometimes mistaken words but still you should have confirmed what she said.

You wouldn't happen to be the same clerk that didn't hear the customer who said her mother had just died and acknowledged her by smiling and laughing would you? Get a hearing aid so you can hear your boss saying, "Well, a-be-be-be-be, you're FIRED!"

Hearing aids would be irrelevant in this situation. Whilst the OP may or may not wear them it is still incredibly difficult to distinguish similar sounding words with hearing aids in - this would only be exacerbated in a shop situation where there is a lot of background noise.
