Today, at my school, we had the opening night of our production in which I act. None of my family or friends came. Basically, after 3 long months of hard work, the only person to "congratulate" to me after the show was the head of the theater department, who just wanted to tell me I was doing it wrong. FML

Same thing different taste

Today, after 10 months of hard work, it was the opening night of the show I was directing. Everybody loved it, except my mother. She called it the worst thing she'd ever seen. Thanks for the support, mum. FML

Today, it was opening night for the play where I was, for the first time ever, one of the leads. I went on stage with a loud and energetic entrance. I came in two scenes early. FML

Today, after spending hours of my time painting sets for the last two months - with less dedication than only the head painter herself, and to the point where my health and grades suffered - I finally got to see the play I worked so hard on. I was the only one they forgot to put in the playbill. FML

Today, after spending years volunteering at community theatres and being accepted into a prestigious university for theatrical design, my public high school gave me a scholarship. All my mother could say was "I'm sorry they wasted their money on you." FML

Today, I came home and told my mom that I got the lead in the school musical, which I was very happy about. She pulled me into a hug then said, "But you know you can't really sing, right?" FML

Today, it was the début of the high school musical I was in. When two others and I sang the word "Hell", my mother yelled at us for using that language, while the musical was still going, and dragged me off stage. FML

Today, my school's theater production was canceled. Not because of budget, but because my co-star fell in love with me and asked me out. When I pointedly declined, he refused to act alongside me since it was "awkward." Everyone's blaming me for it. FML

Today, I went to my son's high school play. The moment I arrived at the auditorium, I shouted out his name to let him know I made it. Thinking I was a student, a teacher yelled, "SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN!" Scared out of my mind, I quickly obeyed, to mass giggling from the kids. FML

I've been acting for all my life. I haven't had my family come see a single show since elementry school, when it stopped being cute. Classic "we want you to be a laywer or something" bullshit. Before I had my car, I had to WALK to the theatre for rehersal because they wouldn't even drive me (I live in the country. No sidewalks, no blocks, it was tresspassing through 2 miles of cornfields everyday) But you know what? I did it. And every rehersal I worked my ass off. It never mattered that nobody was there for me, I loved theatre. Yeah, I had to watch all my friends with smaller parts and half my talent getting bouquets of flowers, but ya'know what? It didn't bother me. Because theatre isn't about getting induvidual praise. People see a show to be entertained and it takes a whole of a cast and crew working together perfectly to put a good show on. And THAT is whats important. Was the show, as a whole, good? Did the cast, as a whole, get applause? Then you should be happy. Quit yer bitchin'

I've been acting in theatre and films for going over five years now, in high school, now college and professionally. It sounds like your just hungry for attention, which doesn't make me surprised that your director told you you're doing it wrong. People who constantly want focus to be on themselves seldom make good performers. It's not about you, it's about being a part of something bigger than yourself. Also, it's opening night, there will be more shows for your friends and family to see. Long story short: YFDI
