I understand why the OP did this. It's not "ZOMG ret@rded!!1!" If her mom truly couldn't afford it but felt obligated, well, sucks to be anyone else in that family. OP was actually being considerate. About paying for it herself, consider this: Working enough hours through college to pay for an Ivy League school could seriously cut into your studies. Why bust your ass paying for it if you won't be able to do well? It would be better, I'd think, to excel at a lesser school than fail miserably at an elite one. As for loans, if her chosen field doesn't pay much, she'll end up waiting tables for 20 years to work off a degree that's now only useful for wiping her ass. Scholarships are the best option, but they don't cover everything, and not everyone qualifies. In short, FYL for having a bitchy, inconsiderate mom.
In unrelated news, I'm horrified that so many FML posters are college grads. I didn't even go to college and I know how to use correct English. There ought to be a required course in every school called "Why Taking Shortcuts On The Internet Makes You A Moron." Anyone who utters the words, "It's just the internet!" gets banned from the school and the internet forever.
Ever hear if a loan??
Hmm dont pay bit now, dont get anything later?
Don't worry about the people saying you deserve it for not going. You don't. Getting loans, scholarships, or grants isn't always an option. A lot of scholarships are very selective in where they're able to be used, and I know in my case, FAFSA barely gave me anything. Plus, working part time would probably not even come close to paying for those schools. Congrats on getting into the schools, though. Maybe you should explain to your mother what you did so she'd understand.
For someone so smart, that was pretty stupid...
Wow. That was stupid. YDI
