Considerate

Today, my mother told me she's disappointed in me for not going to a better college, and that if I was in the top ten of my class that the rest of those ten must be really dumb. Fact is, I threw away the acceptance letters to Carnegie Mellon and Cornell because I didn't want her to have to pay. FML

YDI for not talking to your mom and throwing them away. If you can't afford it, there's always financial aid...

aww that was so cute and nice that you'd do that to help out your mom so she didn't have to pay. people at those schools are usually snobby and stuck up anyway.

LOL at Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! Seriously, honey, you threw away top-rated school acceptances? I certainly hope this is a fake, because if not, you deserve what you got for not researching and pursuing financial aid. Take it from me; my situation was just the opposite. I got accepted at several top-ranked schools, and was #2 in my class, all these AP courses yadda yadda, and parents said NO. Not just you're not going to Cornell, they said you're not going to college period. Unless someone gives you a full ride, you're not going. Because we're not giving you shit. One day I came home to find my financial aid application torn up in little pieces. That was my father's handiwork. I made the best of the education I did get, but I always wondered if my life would have been different if I had told my folks to **** themselves, mortgaged my ass out, and gone to a name school. (And hid my FAF) Okay, this isn't about me, but I'm just saying you can learn from others' life experiences.

it usually costs about a hundred dollars to apply to a college, and spending that much on two different colleges only to throw out the acceptance letters, says to me you're doing pretty well financially. I'm fortunate enough to have parents who can pay for most of my college, but my dad raised the majority of his college money himself. also, the fact that she wishes you could go to a better college means that she probably has the money t pay for a better college. PS. It's weird how out of all the FML's I've read only like two OP's have responded to the comments

isn't Cornell need blind? if it is...you must feel like an idiot.

I don't understand all of these FML... Parents are supposed to pay for your damn college, so why are you hiding that you got accepted to a good college, be proud and let them pay.. you're all throwing your life away if you go to a cheap stupid dumb college...

ivies usually have more financial aid money to lend, and most are trying to get kids through college without debts now. ydi for not doing basic financial aid research

Why apply if you didn't want her to pay?
